Norwegian Journalist Challenges PM Narendra Modi Over Media Freedom During Oslo Visit

OSLO: A Norwegian journalist publicly questioned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over media freedom and human rights during his visit to Norway, drawing attention at a joint press briefing in Oslo.
Following a media appearance alongside Norway’s prime minister, Modi reportedly ignored questions from journalists and left the venue without responding. Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng attempted to ask another question as the Indian prime minister departed, but the elevator doors closed before any response was given.
The issue resurfaced during a separate press briefing held by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, where tense exchanges reportedly took place between journalists and officials regarding media freedom and alleged violations of fundamental rights in India.
During the briefing, Helle Lyng questioned how Norway could place trust in India amid concerns over human rights and asked when Prime Minister Modi would begin taking unscripted questions from independent media.
According to reports, the spokesperson avoided the question by moving on to another journalist, prompting Lyng to leave the hall without receiving an answer.
Later, Lyng posted on X, saying she was surprised that Modi refused to take her question. She also highlighted the contrast between Norway and India in the World Press Freedom Index, noting that Norway ranks first while India is placed 157th alongside countries such as Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, and Cuba.
She added that it is the duty of journalists to question powerful governments and leaders with whom their countries cooperate.
