Balochistan Food Authority Cracks Down on Substandard Food Businesses, One Ice Cream Unit Sealed, 32 Fined

Quetta: The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) has intensified its province-wide enforcement campaign against the production and sale of unhygienic and substandard food items, taking strict action in multiple districts.

According to a BFA spokesperson, food safety teams conducted coordinated inspections across Quetta and other districts, targeting violations of food safety standards, poor hygiene practices, expired products, and unlicensed operations.

During the operation in Quetta, an ice cream manufacturing unit was sealed on the spot due to serious violations, including poor sanitation, absence of a valid license and registration, improper storage conditions, lack of personal hygiene among workers, and failure to comply with standard operating procedures.

Across various districts, inspectors checked general stores, bakeries, restaurants, fast food outlets, milk shops, and water filtration plants. Numerous expired items, including cold drinks, biscuits, chips, spices, juices, and other substandard goods, were seized from retail shops, resulting in fines being imposed.

Bakeries were found selling unpackaged food items without proper labeling or manufacturing and expiry dates, while issues such as poor staff hygiene and the presence of insects were also reported. In restaurants and fast food outlets, violations included unsafe food handling practices, accumulation of waste, mixing of raw and cooked food, lack of protective equipment, and the use of prohibited Chinese salt.

Milk shops and water plants were also found in violation, with concerns over unsafe milk storage and absence of registration certificates for RO plants. Operators were directed to immediately improve conditions and obtain proper registration.

In total, 159 food units were inspected, 32 were fined, 63 were issued improvement notices, and one unit was sealed. Authorities stated that action against violators of food safety laws will be further intensified.

Officials warned that operating a food business without a valid license is a punishable offence and such establishments will not be allowed to continue operations. They urged all food business operators to strictly comply with hygiene standards, food safety SOPs, and legal requirements, failing which strict legal action will follow.
