Study Suggests 7 Hours and 18 Minutes of Sleep May Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

A recent study has revealed how much sleep people should get each night to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

According to **Diabetes UK**, around 4.6 million people in the United Kingdom are living with diabetes, and nearly 90 percent of them have Type 2 diabetes — a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it properly.

Experts say that while obesity and high blood pressure are among the major causes of the disease, lack of sleep also plays a significant role in increasing insulin resistance.

The study, published in **BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care**, found that getting about **7 hours and 18 minutes of sleep every night** may help reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Professor **Naveed Sattar** from **University of Glasgow** explained that poor sleep disrupts the body’s ability to control hunger. As a result, people tend to eat more, and staying awake longer also means there is more time available to consume food.
