MQM Raises Gul Plaza Fire Incident in National Assembly, Demands Deferred Bills for Victims

Islamabad: MQM Member of National Assembly (MNA) Arshad Wahra raised the issue of the Gul Plaza fire in the National Assembly, urging the federal government to defer utility bills for three months for the affected traders and residents.

Speaking on a point of order, the Karachi-based lawmaker acknowledged the provincial government’s efforts, stating that a committee had been formed to assist the victims. He also called on the federal government to establish a similar committee to support those affected by the fire.

Wahra appreciated the efforts of the fire brigade and water board in controlling the fire but criticized the delayed response, attributing it to poor traffic management. He highlighted that MQM had previously provided 50 fire engines and two snorcles (rescue equipment), but Karachi has still been neglected in terms of fire safety planning.

He further pointed out that ongoing road construction issues exacerbate traffic congestion in a city of 20 million people and stressed the need for proper urban planning. Wahra concluded by emphasizing the importance of convening a “Karachi Accord” to address the city’s critical infrastructure and governance challenges.
