Vitamin C–Rich Diet More Effective for Skin Health Than Creams, New Study Reveals

Islamabad – A new scientific study has revealed that consuming vitamin C through diet is more beneficial for skin health than using topical creams, lotions, or serums.
The research, published in the *Journal of Investigative Dermatology*, involved 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. According to the findings, eating foods rich in vitamin C significantly increases vitamin C levels in both the blood and the skin, with skin concentrations directly reflecting levels present in the bloodstream.
Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers stated that there is a strong link between vitamin C intake and skin health. She explained that vitamin C circulating in the blood reaches all layers of the skin, improving its overall function and condition.
During the eight-week study, participants were instructed to consume two kiwifruits daily, providing approximately 250 milligrams of vitamin C. As a result, their blood vitamin C levels increased, leading to noticeable improvements in skin health and enhancement of the skin’s outer layer.
Researchers noted that improved skin health is associated with increased collagen production and faster regeneration of skin cells, both essential for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin.
Professor Vissers further explained that while vitamin C is water-soluble, it does not easily penetrate the skin when applied topically. In contrast, when consumed through food, it is efficiently delivered to skin cells via the bloodstream.
**Expert Advice**
Health experts recommend that healthy individuals consume around 250 milligrams of vitamin C daily to maintain adequate blood levels. Since the body does not store vitamin C, regular intake of fruits and vegetables is essential, with at least one vitamin C–rich food included in the daily diet.
Experts emphasize that true skin beauty and health depend largely on internal nutrition rather than relying solely on external skincare products.
