Celebrating the 94th Birth Anniversary of Iconic Urdu Poet Jaun Elia

**Islamabad:** Today marks the 94th birth anniversary of the legendary Urdu poet Jaun Elia, whose rebellious tone, simplicity, fearlessness, and unique style continue to captivate audiences of all ages.

Born Syed Hussain Jaun Asghar Naqvi on December 14, 1931, in India, Jaun Elia was not only a master of Urdu but also proficient in English, Arabic, and Persian. He passed away on November 8, 2002, in Karachi, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire literary circles.

Jaun Elia’s first poetry collection, *Shayad* (1991), is regarded as a prelude to modern Urdu literature. His poetry often challenged societal norms and traditions, reflecting his distinct perspective and exceptional intellectual depth. Critics note that he was instrumental in popularizing modern ghazal in post-independence Pakistan.

Even after 23 years of his passing, his work remains widely read and celebrated, with five posthumous books published. Among his most famous verses is:

*”Main bhi bohat ajeeb hoon, itna ajeeb hoon ke bas,
Khud ko tabah kar liya aur malal bhi nahin.”*

Jaun Elia’s enduring influence as a poet, philosopher, and literary icon continues to resonate with fans across generations.
