Justice Athar Minallah Resigns, Cites Assault on Constitution as Reason

**ISLAMABAD (Qudrat Daily)** — Supreme Court Justice **Athar Minallah** has resigned from his position, submitting his resignation to **President Arif Ali Zardari**, citing a **breach of the constitution** he had sworn to uphold.
In his resignation letter, Justice Minallah stated that he had always performed his duties with utmost integrity, but the **27th Constitutional Amendment** has fundamentally undermined the constitution, making it impossible for him to continue.
He recalled taking oaths **11 years ago as a judge of the Islamabad High Court**, later as its Chief Justice, and eventually as a Supreme Court judge, **pledging loyalty to the Constitution of Pakistan, not to any individual or institution**.
Justice Minallah added that prior to the amendment, he had expressed **constitutional concerns in a letter to the then Chief Justice of Pakistan**, warning about the amendment’s potential impact. He noted that these concerns have now materialized, and the principles of the constitution are under attack.
He reflected on the **symbolic importance of judicial robes**, emphasizing that they represent the public’s sacred trust in the judiciary, not mere ceremonial attire, and lamented that in many instances, they have become a symbol of silence and inaction.
Concluding his letter, Justice Minallah expressed hope that future judges will uphold justice with truthfulness, stating, “With this hope, I remove this robe for the last time. I resign from my position as Supreme Court judge, praying that those who dispense justice do so with truth.”
