Pakistan Faces Challenges and Economic Goals: British High Commissioner

Islamabad: British High Commissioner Jane Merritt has remarked that Pakistan is currently grappling with challenges and ambitious economic goals. Addressing editors through a statement, Jane Merritt mentioned that her first year in Pakistan has been memorable, describing it as a year she will cherish. She expressed admiration for Pakistan’s warmth, natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and delicious cuisine, which she fondly remembers from her time in the UK.
Jane Merritt highlighted her hikes in the picturesque Margalla Hills and the memorable moments spent exploring the enchanting narrow streets of Nathia Gali. Reflecting on the performance of both countries’ cricket teams, she noted the enjoyable experience of witnessing PSL matches at Rawalpindi Stadium and the T20 in London’s Oval.
While she expressed no immediate plans to join the cricket team, she emphasized the importance of familial systems in Pakistani society. She recounted the warm reception her 82-year-old mother received upon visiting Pakistan earlier this year, praising the hospitality extended by her Pakistani colleagues during their travels together.
Jane Merritt praised Pakistani cuisine, stating that mentioning Pakistan without its food would be incomplete for her. She described the scent of the world’s best mangoes wafting through her office, recalling with satisfaction the diverse culinary delights from Peshawar’s Chapli Kebabs to Multan’s sweets and Karachi’s Biryani.
She concluded by acknowledging Pakistan’s ongoing challenges, including the need for essential economic reforms to ensure long-term success. She stressed the importance of consensus among all stakeholders and highlighted Pakistan’s struggle with educational access for out-of-school children, noting Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent declaration of an “educational emergency.”
Jane Merritt affirmed Britain’s commitment as a close friend and partner, recognizing Pakistani capabilities, innovative spirit, and talents as instrumental in addressing these challenges. She expressed gratitude for the splendid experiences of her first year in Pakistan.
