Strict Fines and Demerit Points System Enforced for Traffic Violations in Karachi

Karachi: The Sindh government has implemented **strict fines and a demerit points system** to curb traffic violations across Karachi. The move follows amendments to the **12th Schedule under Section 121-A of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965**.
Senior Minister **Sharjeel Inam Memon** announced that **tough action** will be taken against motorists involved in **wrong-side driving, signal violations, and overspeeding**.
Under the revised penalties, fines are categorized by vehicle type:
* **Motorcycle overspeeding:** Rs 5,000 fine
* **Car overspeeding:** Rs 15,000 fine
* **Heavy transport overspeeding:** Rs 20,000 fine
Additionally, **8 demerit points** will be added for each overspeeding offense.
Driving **without a valid license** will now result in a **Rs 50,000 fine** and **6 demerit points**, while **reckless driving** carries a **Rs 25,000 fine** and **8 demerit points**.
Memon added that **one-wheeling, driving without a helmet, lane violations, tinted windows**, and **carrying passengers on bus rooftops** will also lead to heavy penalties.
The minister emphasized that the government’s goal is **to protect lives, not collect fines**, as violations such as signal-breaking, overspeeding, and stunt driving often lead to fatal accidents.
Furthermore, **repeat violators** could have their **driving licenses suspended or revoked**.
Memon also revealed that the Sindh government is introducing a **digital traffic monitoring system** to record repeat offenses and manage driver profiles using the **demerit points framework**, ensuring better enforcement and road safety in Karachi.
