ISLAMABAD: The Federal Flood Commission has reported a high flood at Guddu and Sukkur barrages in the Indus River, while Kotri Barrage is experiencing a low flood with stable water levels.
According to the commission, the Chenab River at Panjnad is currently at a low flood stage, with water levels gradually decreasing. Federal Minister Moin Wattoo stated that Tarbela Dam has been at 100% capacity since August 27, while Mangla Dam is 96% filled, with 4 feet of storage capacity remaining.
He added that the government’s focus is on damage assessment and providing relief to affected people, with relief operations being accelerated in flood-hit areas.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that water flow in most rivers of the province has returned to normal. The Indus, Jhelum, and Ravi rivers are flowing at normal levels, while the Chenab has normalized at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad, and Trimmu barrages. At Panjnad, however, a low flood persists with water flow reduced to 194,000 cusecs.
In the Sutlej River, a medium flood is recorded at Ganda Singh Wala, while Sulemanki and Islam headworks are experiencing low flood levels. In Dera Ghazi Khan, hill torrents have normalized.
The PDMA warned that widespread rains are expected in most districts over the next 24 hours, with the 11th spell of monsoon likely to continue until September 19. Areas including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Jhang, Sargodha, and Mianwali may receive heavy showers.
Between September 18 and 19, Rawalpindi, Murree, and Galliyat could witness increased flow in local streams. The PDMA stated that on the instructions of Punjab’s Chief Minister, local administrations are on alert. Citizens have been advised to contact the emergency helpline 1129 in case of emergencies.
