Electricity Prices Likely to Drop by Rs1.69 Per Unit for Consumers Nationwide

Islamabad: Power tariffs across the country are expected to decrease by Rs1.69 per unit under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA), providing significant relief to consumers in their September bills.

During a public hearing at NEPRA headquarters, chaired by Member Sindh Rafiq Sheikh, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) stated that, subject to approval, the reduction will translate into Rs23 billion in relief for consumers.

NEPRA officials noted that the FCA reduction would apply for one month only. However, it will not extend to lifeline customers, protected consumers, prepaid users, and electric vehicle charging stations. The adjustment will be applicable to all other consumers, including K-Electric customers, in line with the government’s uniform tariff policy.

The hearing also witnessed strong remarks from the authority over fatal electrocution incidents during July’s monsoon rains. NEPRA expressed anger that 11 people had died in a single month due to poor safety measures, with six deaths reported in the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) area alone. The regulator criticized distribution companies for inadequate precautions, noting that while NEPRA imposes heavy fines, many companies secure stay orders from courts.

NEPRA said it will thoroughly review the submitted data before issuing its detailed decision on the proposed tariff reduction.
