UN Security Council Expresses Concerns Over Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty, Urges Diplomatic Solutions to Avoid Military Conflict

Islamabad – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a closed-door consultative meeting to discuss the growing security concerns between Pakistan and India, particularly regarding the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. The UNSC members expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the region, urging both countries to avoid military confrontation and pursue diplomatic avenues.
According to a statement released by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Tuesday, the closed-door meeting, convened at Pakistan’s request under the agenda item “India-Pakistan Issue,” addressed several pressing issues, including the escalating security situation, Indian provocations, and the situation in occupied Kashmir.
The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that UNSC members expressed grave concern over the increasing tension and emphasized the need for avoiding military clashes. They urged both countries to prioritize diplomatic efforts in resolving the issues at hand. Many members of the UNSC also identified the Kashmir dispute as the root cause of regional instability and reiterated that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
During the meeting, Pakistan’s representative provided a briefing on India’s unilateral actions on April 23, highlighting the potential for serious consequences due to India’s provocative measures. Intelligence reports also indicated the possibility of Indian military actions. The spokesperson also referred to India’s state-sponsored terrorism and targeted killings in the region.
The spokesperson reaffirmed that Pakistan is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and emphasized that, in the event of aggression, Pakistan retains the right to self-defense under the United Nations Charter.
Additionally, Pakistan strongly rejected India’s accusations regarding the Pulwama attack, calling the unsubstantiated and baseless allegations “condemnable.” The Foreign Office stated that India often exploits such incidents to undermine the Kashmiri struggle for their rights.
On the issue of the Indus Waters Treaty, the spokesperson termed India’s move to suspend the agreement as a “dangerous move” and warned that obstructing or altering the flow of rivers would be tantamount to war. UNSC members also expressed concerns over the suspension of the treaty.
The spokesperson further emphasized Pakistan’s support for UN Secretary-General’s and UNSC’s mediation efforts, urging the international community to act swiftly and responsibly in de-escalating tensions.
