Australia Jobs and Skills Report: AI to Transform Jobs, Most Will Change Rather Than Disappear

According to a new report by Jobs and Skills Australia, artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to impact nearly every sector, but most jobs will undergo transformation instead of being completely eliminated.

The report highlights that by 2050, professions such as office clerks, receptionists, bookkeepers, sales and marketing professionals, business analysts, and programmers will face the greatest decline in employment. Conversely, jobs in construction labor, hospitality workers, cleaning and laundry staff, and public administration are expected to increase.

It challenges the misconception that AI will wipe out the workforce, stating that almost all occupations will be affected, but mostly through change rather than extinction. Office and clerical work, previously considered safe from automation, can now largely be performed by generative AI.

Nursing, construction, and hospitality sectors are deemed the most secure, while marketing, programming, and bookkeeping are the most vulnerable.

The research also shows that while job growth may slow in the 2030s, it will accelerate in the 2040s. By 2050, there will be more jobs involving AI than without it in Australia.

Additionally, the report notes that demand for voice actors has dropped by up to 80%, as AI now produces voices for content. Similarly, large companies have replaced dozens of call center staff with chatbots.
