Nationwide Mourning: Independence Celebrations Postponed Amid Deadly Floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Islamabad:In light of the **devastating rains and flash floods** causing massive loss of life in **Khyber Pakhtunkhwa**, the government has **postponed major public events** including the **”Battle of Truth” (Ma’araka-e-Haq)** and **Independence Day celebrations** scheduled for **August 16 and 17** in Islamabad.

The decision was made on the instructions of **Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar**, who ordered the **postponement of the event at F-9 Park** to express **solidarity with the victims** and allow authorities to **focus on relief and rescue operations**.

According to the official statement, this move reflects the government’s commitment to **standing with the affected citizens** during this humanitarian crisis.

As per reports, over **250 people have lost their lives** across **Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan** due to **torrential rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods**. The situation in **Khyber Pakhtunkhwa** is particularly dire, with **more than 200 deaths** reported—**over 150 of them in Buner alone**, where dozens remain missing and widespread destruction has been recorded.

Emergency relief efforts are underway, but authorities warn that the **death toll may rise** as search and rescue operations continue in remote and affected regions.

The federal government has called on all departments and the public to **support relief efforts**, while urging media and institutions to maintain a **tone of empathy and responsibility** in the wake of this tragedy.
