Khuzdar Gas Plant Project Delayed Since 2013, Citizens Demand Immediate Inauguration

Khuzdar:The long-awaited 100-cusec gas plant approved for Khuzdar in 2013 remains unopened, leaving nearly 1.6 million residents struggling with high fuel costs and severe hardships. Despite allocation of land in Khuzdar’s Suni area and repeated public pressure, the project has yet to see any progress on the ground.
In 2016, a prominent nationalist political party organized a massive rally demanding the immediate inauguration of the gas plant. Later, in 2017, the party staged a three-day hunger strike, during which the then-Deputy Commissioner visited the protest camp, displayed the project files, and showed the designated location. Protesters were assured of action and persuaded to end the strike.
However, despite these efforts and visible documentation, the plant remains non-functional. Locals and political analysts believe the delay stems from political motives, with elected representatives allegedly avoiding action to either claim credit later or serve personal interests.
Public and political circles have voiced strong criticism, accusing leaders of ignoring the basic needs of Khuzdar’s citizens while indulging in luxuries. They have now appealed to Chief Minister Balochistan Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the Chief Secretary, Commissioner Kalat Division, and the Deputy Commissioner of Khuzdar to intervene and ensure the immediate inauguration and activation of the gas facility.
The demand is clear: bring Khuzdar’s approved gas plant into operation and provide the people with the natural gas they have long been denied.
