PTI Leaders in Kot Lakhpat Jail Release Another Letter Criticizing Failed Democracy Pact

Lahore: Another letter from imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in Kot Lakhpat Jail has surfaced, criticizing the failure of the Democracy Charter (Misaq-e-Jumhuriat) agreed upon by two major political parties.

In the letter, PTI leaders Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmood-ul-Rasheed, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Umar Sarfraz Cheema stated that the pact, which was meant to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution and ensure judicial independence, has failed due to the self-interests of the leaders of these parties.

They accused the current government of undermining democracy through measures like the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) against the media, the 26th Amendment targeting the judiciary, and the use of Form 47 to weaken the Parliament. The letter stressed that the democratic rights of the public must be fully respected.

The leaders further emphasized that upholding the Constitution and the rule of law are essential to resolve the country’s ongoing problems.

This letter follows a previous open letter by the same detained leaders, in which they called for negotiations between the government and PTI.
