Opposition’s Disruption During Maryam Nawaz’s Speech Results in Suspension of 26 Members

Lahore: The opposition’s protest during Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s speech in the Punjab Assembly has backfired, with the Speaker suspending 26 members of the opposition. In addition to the suspension, the Speaker announced that a reference would be sent to the Election Commission against the suspended members.
According to details, during yesterday’s session of the Punjab Assembly, when Maryam Nawaz Sharif stood to deliver her speech, the opposition began protesting. The protest continued throughout her speech, while the Speaker repeatedly tried to control the situation.
Today, the Speaker took notice of the incident and, under Rule 210(3), suspended 26 opposition members for 15 sessions.
Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan stated that he believes in upholding democratic and parliamentary traditions. He emphasized that the ruling party enjoys majority in the assembly, and expressed regret over the opposition’s disruptive behavior. Despite multiple warnings, the opposition members continued their misconduct, violating the rules openly.
In addition, 37 election petitions have been filed in the Punjab Assembly regarding the recent elections.
