Massive Solar Storm Disrupts GPS and Radio Signals Across North America

New York, NY:A powerful solar storm hit Earth early Tuesday morning, causing widespread disruptions to GPS navigation systems, radio communications, and satellite operations across parts of North America. Scientists from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center confirmed that the storm, classified as a G4-level geomagnetic event, originated from a massive coronal mass ejection (CME) detected on May 25.
Airlines and emergency services reported temporary difficulties with high-frequency radio transmissions, while several GPS-dependent systems, including agricultural and maritime operations, experienced brief outages or reduced accuracy.
“This is one of the strongest solar storms we’ve seen in over a decade,” said Dr. Amanda Liu, a solar physicist at NOAA. “While the effects are mostly temporary, these events remind us how vulnerable our technology is to space weather.”
Power grids remained largely unaffected, though officials are closely monitoring potential fluctuations. Aurora borealis sightings have been reported as far south as Illinois and Pennsylvania, offering a rare visual spectacle to many skywatchers.
Scientists urge caution and preparedness as additional solar activity is expected in the coming days.
