Bangladesh Interim Government to Pursue Legal Process for Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition from India

Dhaka:Bangladesh’s interim government has announced that it will proceed with the legal process to request the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. The announcement came in a press briefing today, delivered by Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus’ press secretary, Shafique Alam.

Alam stated that the government would formally request the extradition of Sheikh Hasina once all legal procedures were completed, in accordance with the existing agreement between Bangladesh and India regarding the extradition of citizens. He further emphasized that their stance was clear: they wanted to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh to stand trial for alleged crimes committed during her time in office.

“Our position is clear: we want to bring Sheikh Hasina back and hold her accountable in the court of law,” Alam said. “During her tenure, there was widespread bloodshed and several incidents of human rights violations. We must seek justice for the victims of these crimes.”

The press secretary referenced the July-August revolution, during which approximately 1,500 people were killed, and many others went missing under Sheikh Hasina’s government. Alam also mentioned that a recent White Paper revealed that nearly 16 billion dollars of public funds were siphoned off from Bangladesh every year during her tenure.

“Our commitment is to ensure that Sheikh Hasina faces justice for her actions. We are determined to hold her accountable for the alleged corruption and human rights violations committed under her rule,” Alam added.

The briefing was attended by Deputy Press Secretaries of the Chief Advisor, Apurba Jahangir and Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar.

It is important to note that Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August following a student-led movement that led to her resignation as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has since remained in India, and the interim government is now actively seeking her extradition to face charges in Bangladesh.

The situation continues to unfold, with many eyes on the potential diplomatic ramifications of such a high-profile extradition case.
