Gas Shortage and Outages Continue in Quetta; Citizens Protest and Block Roads
Quetta:Gas shortages and outages persist in various parts of Quetta, causing inconvenience to local residents. In response to the ongoing gas disruption on Spinny Road, citizens staged a protest and blocked the road.
A spokesperson for the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) clarified that the gas distribution network in Quetta and surrounding areas is operating smoothly as per the usual routine. The spokesperson further explained that natural gas, by its nature, does not have any odor. Therefore, an odorant is added to the gas to detect leaks and ensure safety. This process is carried out annually as part of SSGC’s efforts to raise public awareness about potential hazards.
The spokesperson also highlighted that in the winter months, some individuals fail to take appropriate safety precautions, which is why the addition of odorant becomes essential to encourage people to remain vigilant.
In a notable update, the spokesperson mentioned that complaints regarding a strong gas smell had been reported from a girls’ hostel, but no similar complaints had been received from other locations. They suggested that the issue may have been caused by a possible leakage in the hostel’s internal fittings.
SSGC urged residents to follow safety protocols while using gas-powered appliances. Citizens were advised to keep windows or doors slightly open when using heaters and to ensure that all gas appliances, such as heaters and geysers, are switched off before going to sleep to prevent any accidents.
