Most Powerful World Leaders Develop Delusions of Grandeur Like Trump, Says Hamid Mir

ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist and political analyst Hamid Mir has said that many powerful rulers around the world eventually develop delusions of grandeur, similar to US President Donald Trump, believing that nobody is wiser or more capable than themselves.
He said this arrogance and excessive sense of self-importance eventually become the reason for their political downfall, adding that this phenomenon is not limited to Trump but has been witnessed in the case of tyrannical and authoritarian rulers throughout history.
Commenting on the results of the US midterm elections, Hamid Mir said that when the intoxication of power and authoritarianism take control of a ruler, the individual begins moving towards decline.
He explained that the issue was not confined to any particular individual or Donald Trump. Whenever someone acquires excessive power and authority in any part of the world, they begin to believe that nobody else is as intelligent, wise or capable as they are.

According to Hamid Mir, this psychological condition is known as a “delusion of grandeur”, in which an individual develops the misconception that only they are right while the rest of the world is wrong.
He said US President Donald Trump had also fallen victim to this mindset. After being elected president for a second term, Trump had developed a firm belief that no other personality in the world was more competent or intelligent than him.
Hamid Mir argued that this arrogance and excessive self-confidence pushed Trump towards decisions that ultimately contributed to his political decline.
He also identified another major problem with Trump’s policies, alleging that the US president had faced political and diplomatic pressure, as well as alleged blackmail, from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which significantly influenced his decisions.
Independent Judiciary and Free Media Essential for Democracy
Highlighting the importance of democratic institutions, Hamid Mir said democracy becomes genuinely strong and vibrant only when the judiciary is independent and the media can convey the truth to the public without pressure.
He said the results of the recent US midterm elections had demonstrated to the world that when people’s votes are respected, politically conscious citizens can use their electoral power to challenge even arrogant rulers with authoritarian tendencies.
The analyst maintained that the election results had proved that when people become frustrated with injustice, arrogance and oppressive policies, they express their verdict through the ballot box.
He added that the public reaction against Trump’s political approach and alliance policies had sent a clear message that people’s voices could not be suppressed indefinitely through the exercise of power.
Hamid Mir concluded that the election results had delivered a strong warning to politicians who rely on arrogance and authoritarianism, emphasising that power is temporary and ultimate authority rests with the people.
