NADRA clarifies whether CNIC Is automatically cancelled after union council issues death certificate

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified that a citizen’s Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) is not automatically cancelled after a Union Council issues a death certificate.
As per reports, NADRA spokesperson Syed Shabahat Ali said in a podcast that a Union Council’s issuance of a death certificate does not immediately cancel the deceased person’s CNIC. Instead, the identity card is temporarily deactivated based on the relevant record, while formal cancellation requires a separate procedure.
He also explained that the Union Council’s declaration of a person as deceased and NADRA’s formal cancellation of their CNIC are two separate processes.
Moreover, the spokesperson said a Union Council death certificate only informs NADRA that the local government has declared the person deceased. The family or a close relative can then approach NADRA to apply to cancel the identity card.
NADRA also verifies the applicant’s identity through biometric verification to ensure that the person seeking cancellation is genuinely part of the deceased individual’s family record and family tree.
