Jamaat-e-Islami, Government agree on mechanism to reduce Petroleum Levy

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami and government committees have reached an agreement on a mechanism to reduce the petroleum levy, according to sources.
Sources said a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman is likely to take place today to discuss the matter.
According to sources, the Prime Minister’s House has informed Jamaat-e-Islami’s negotiating team about preparations for the meeting scheduled for today.
The agreement between the two sides on the mechanism for reducing the petroleum levy marks progress in their negotiations.
Further details regarding the proposed reduction and its implementation are expected following the meeting.
When will the final Subsidy decision be announced?
Despite the latest progress in negotiations, no final announcement has been made regarding the implementation of the proposed subsidy.
Details are expected to emerge after consultations between the technical committees and approval from the government.
For now, the proposed reduction of Rs30 to Rs40 per litre should be considered potential relief for eligible consumers, not a confirmed price cut for all consumers.
