Government Considers Key Measures to Tackle Gas Shortage During Upcoming Winter

ISLAMABAD: With the arrival of colder weather approaching, public concerns over gas availability during winter are growing. The government has begun considering key measures to address the anticipated gas shortage and improve supply to consumers during the upcoming winter season.

During a briefing, officials said regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) would be prioritised for power generation and the industrial sector, while plans were being developed to ensure the use of locally produced gas for domestic consumers and promote alternative energy sources.

Officials also said measures were being taken to ensure uninterrupted gas transmission from reserves located in northern areas. Proposals for bank financing to support alternative water-heating and space-heating systems are also under consideration to provide additional relief to consumers.

To maintain gas supplies during the winter months, the government is working on a plan to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from December through February.

According to sources, gas utilities and the Petroleum Division have estimated that at least 22 LNG cargoes would be required to meet demand during the period. However, the Energy Task Force is considering procuring between 10 and 12 cargoes, taking into account available resources and the regional situation.

The difference between the estimated requirement and the number of cargoes under consideration highlights the challenge of balancing domestic gas demand with available financial and energy resources.

Energy experts believe that timely planning and effective import arrangements could significantly reduce the impact of gas shortages during the winter season.

The government is expected to continue reviewing supply requirements and alternative arrangements to ensure that domestic consumers, industries and power producers receive adequate gas supplies during the colder months.
