Emergency in KP Likely as Pervez Khattak Rules Out Governor’s Rule; PTI Warns of Escalating Crisis

ISLAMABAD:Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak has said he believes an emergency is more likely to be imposed in the province than governor’s rule, adding that he would consider a role in the province’s affairs if an offer were made to him.
Speaking during a private television programme, Khattak said he had not received any such offer and could not comment on what role he might play.
He argued that governor’s rule would have limited benefits because it could last for a maximum of three months, extendable to six months, whereas an emergency could remain in force for a longer, unspecified period.
“I can clearly see an emergency being imposed,” Khattak said, adding that his decision to accept any potential offer would depend on the circumstances.
He said he would consider taking responsibility only if he believed he could improve the situation, ensure good governance and contribute to the province’s development.
### Report Claims Decision Taken to Impose Emergency
Meanwhile, television anchor Kamran Shahid has claimed that a high-level meeting at the Presidency resulted in an agreement to impose an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a post on social media platform X, Shahid said, citing what he described as credible sources, that the participants had agreed on imposing an emergency in the province.
According to his post, sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate have been summoned for October 13 to facilitate the process. He said the proposed move would be based on a report submitted by the provincial governor regarding the law and order situation.
Shahid also suggested that efforts by Maulana Fazlur Rehman to reverse the reported decision faced significant obstacles. However, the claims regarding the final decision and the parliamentary schedule were not independently verified in the information provided.
### PTI Warns Emergency Could Deepen Crisis
Separately, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has opposed the imposition of governor’s rule or an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, arguing that such measures would aggravate the existing crisis.
Speaking to the media after meeting Chief Minister Sohail Afridi in Peshawar, Gohar said an emergency would be harmful to both the province and the federal government.
He said there was agreement on the need to eliminate terrorism, but differences remained over the methods being pursued to achieve that objective.
Gohar maintained that federal intervention had weakened the authority of the provincial government and called for the immediate restoration of meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan under the previously restricted arrangements.
He argued that restoring those meetings could help improve the situation and urged the authorities to pursue measures that address security challenges without further intensifying political tensions.
The debate over a possible emergency comes amid heightened political tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration over security and governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
