Decision to Extend Detention of Imran Khan’s Sisters Will Depend on Security Situation: Rana Sanaullah

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that any decision to extend the detention of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and the sisters of party founder Imran Khan will be based on intelligence reports and ground realities rather than anyone’s personal wishes or mood.

Speaking on a programme hosted by journalist Muhammad Malik, Rana Sanaullah said Pakistan was facing a serious wave of terrorism that posed a direct threat to the writ of the state and the country’s security.

Responding to a question about whether Imran Khan’s sisters would be released after the completion of their 30-day detention period, he said such administrative and security decisions depended on operational requirements at the time and reports provided by intelligence agencies.

He added that law enforcement agencies were taking measures to eliminate terrorism and restore lasting peace and order across the country, with all relevant institutions actively engaged in protecting Pakistan’s security and stability.

In response to another question, the government adviser said certain individuals had been placed in protective custody because of security concerns and threats to their personal safety.

He explained that the measures were intended to protect them from possible public unrest, unpleasant incidents or other potential dangers.

Rana Sanaullah firmly rejected the impression that the detentions were motivated by personal animosity or political revenge. He maintained that the actions were being taken in the interests of public order, within constitutional limits and in response to state security requirements.

He further said that legal action would continue against individuals involved in activities against the state, violations of the law or attempts to disrupt public order, adding that the government would not yield to pressure in such matters.

The question of whether the detention period would be extended remains dependent, according to Rana Sanaullah, on the prevailing security situation and assessments by the relevant authorities.
