UNESCO Adds 12 Pakistani Heritage Sites to World Heritage Tentative List
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added 12 historical and cultural sites from Pakistan to its World Heritage Tentative List.
The newly added sites include four locations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the Kalash Valley in Chitral district. In Sindh, the historic forts of Kot Diji, Naukot and Umerkot have also been included.
Punjab’s newly listed heritage sites include Phir Wala Fort, Rohtas-era Rawat Fort and the Tomb of Sultan Muqarrab Khan.
With the addition of these 12 sites, the total number of Pakistani sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List has risen to 37.
Being placed on the Tentative List is an important initial step toward achieving World Heritage status. The move is expected to highlight Pakistan’s diverse historical and cultural heritage on the international stage.
The inclusion of these sites could also contribute to heritage conservation, promote tourism and strengthen local economies by attracting greater international interest to Pakistan’s historic and cultural destinations.
