Teacher Injured in Lahore Tuition Centre Roof Collapse Says She Never Expected Ceiling to Give Way

Islamabad/Lahore: A teacher injured in the tragic roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area has said she never imagined the leaking roof would suddenly cave in, describing the incident as a devastating tragedy.
Speaking to the media from Lahore General Hospital, Anila said she had been teaching young children at the tuition centre for the past two years. She explained that, due to financial difficulties, she conducted classes at the same location, while her husband earned a living by operating a roadside cart near a local market.
According to Anila, around 30 to 35 children were enrolled at the tuition centre, while 20 to 22 students were present in class on the day of the incident.
She said the recent monsoon rains had caused water to seep through the roof, prompting repair work to begin. However, she added that she had no idea the roof would suddenly collapse.
Anila also revealed that her daughter was among those injured in the incident. Although the child has recovered and been discharged from hospital, Anila said she has not yet been able to see her while receiving treatment herself.
The roof collapse claimed the lives of 14 children and left several others injured. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, funeral prayers for the children who lost their lives were held as grieving families laid their loved ones to rest. Heartbreaking scenes unfolded as parents mourned the loss of their children.
One bereaved mother said her son had repeatedly told her on the morning of the tragedy that he did not want to attend tuition classes. She recalled persuading him to go because she feared he might be scolded by his teacher for being absent, never imagining it would be the last time she would see him alive.
Another affected woman urged the government to improve the quality of education and facilities in public schools, arguing that many parents rely on private tuition centres due to shortcomings in the public education system. She also called for stricter inspections of educational buildings and stronger safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has left the local community in deep mourning and renewed calls for greater oversight of private educational facilities and building safety.
