Hamid Mir Claims India’s Chenab Diversion Plan Has Become an International Issue

Lahore:Senior Pakistani journalist **Hamid Mir** has claimed that India’s reported plan to divert water from the Chenab River to the Beas River through a tunnel has become an international issue after it was first highlighted on Pakistani media earlier this month.
In a post on X, Mir said that **Geo News** had exposed the alleged project on June 2, describing it as a violation of international law. He stated that the issue has since gained wider international attention.
According to Mir, the project involves the construction of a **9-kilometre tunnel** in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh at an estimated cost of **23.25 billion Indian rupees**. He alleged that the tunnel would divert approximately **2 million acre-feet of water annually** from the Chenab River to the Beas River.
Mir further claimed that construction on the project began in 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2029. He argued that the proposed diversion would violate the **Indus Waters Treaty**, as well as provisions of the **1997 UN Watercourses Convention** and the **1969 Vienna Convention**.

He also alleged that the project is aimed at reducing Pakistan’s water resources and cited remarks attributed to Indian commentators suggesting that the diversion could significantly affect Pakistan’s agricultural landscape.
**India has not officially responded to Mir’s claims, and the allegations have not been independently verified.** The reported project and its legal implications remain a subject of debate between the two countries.
