Trump Criticizes NATO Allies Over Iran, Says They Failed to Act on Nuclear Threat

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has strongly criticized several NATO allies, including Italy, over their approach to Iran and what he described as the country’s serious nuclear threat.

Speaking on the issue, Trump said the United States had spent trillions of dollars supporting and defending NATO over the years, while some allies were unwilling to take action regarding Iran.

“We have spent trillions of dollars on NATO,” Trump said. “Italy and its prime minister are not even considering participating in any action concerning Iran and its grave nuclear threat.”

The US president expressed frustration with America’s allies, arguing that the United States had protected these countries for decades but did not receive sufficient support in return during critical moments.

“We defended these countries for many decades,” Trump said. “When the test came, they were neither there for our defense nor for the rest of the world. That is not a good thing.”

Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing international discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear activities and broader security concerns in the Middle East.

The comments are likely to add to existing tensions within the NATO alliance, where member states have often differed on approaches to regional conflicts, military interventions, and diplomatic engagement with Iran.

Despite disagreements among allies, the United States continues to push for a coordinated international response to issues related to regional security and nuclear non-proliferation.
