US-Iran Talks in Switzerland Show Progress on Hormuz Strait, Regional De-escalation

WASHINGTON: Negotiations between Iranian and American delegations in Switzerland have yielded positive results, with progress reported on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and reducing regional tensions, according to a US diplomat cited by an American news website.

The diplomat said discussions focused on mechanisms to maintain stability in Lebanon and strengthen the effectiveness of a potential ceasefire. The talks were described as constructive, with all parties expressing satisfaction over the developments achieved during the meeting.

According to the diplomat, the United States made it clear that it wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain fully open to ensure regional security and the uninterrupted flow of global trade. The parties also agreed on a framework for future contacts between political leaders and technical teams.

The American news website reported that representatives from all four participating sides appeared satisfied with the progress made during the discussions.

The negotiations took place on Sunday in the Swiss resort area of Bürgenstock, with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar present during the talks between the Iranian and US delegations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir welcomed US Vice President J.D. Vance, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the Prime Minister of Qatar, in what was described as a historic diplomatic gathering watched closely around the world.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed the high-level US-Iran meeting a significant day for global peace and prosperity and expressed hope for a positive outcome from the dialogue.

US Vice President J.D. Vance stated that establishing peace across the Middle East remains a top priority for Washington and said the United States is prepared for a fundamental change in its relationship with Iran.

The Prime Minister of Qatar described the negotiations as historic and important not only for regional security but also for global stability and the international economy.
