Sleeping Less Than Six Hours a Night Linked to 19 Serious Health Risks

ISLAMABAD: Health experts have warned that regularly getting less than six hours of sleep per night can have wide-ranging effects on both physical and mental health, increasing the risk of numerous medical conditions and reducing overall well-being.

With the widespread use of smartphones and other digital devices, many people have developed a habit of staying awake late into the night, leading to chronic sleep deprivation. Medical studies suggest that this habit can contribute to a variety of health problems.

According to research, insufficient sleep can negatively affect mood, making individuals more irritable, emotionally sensitive, and less productive. Sleep deprivation is also associated with frequent headaches and migraines due to increased stress hormones and reduced pain tolerance.

Experts say that sleeping less than six hours a night raises the risk of obesity by increasing hunger and cravings for high-fat and sugary foods. Studies have found that the likelihood of obesity may increase by up to 30 percent among people who consistently sleep too little.

Lack of sleep may also affect vision, causing dry eyes and blurred eyesight. In addition, it has been linked to serious cardiovascular conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attacks, irregular heartbeat, stroke, and diabetes.

Research further indicates that inadequate sleep slows reaction times, weakens the immune system, and makes it harder to concentrate and stay focused. Mental health can also suffer, with studies showing a strong association between chronic sleep deprivation and depression or anxiety.

Health experts warn that insufficient sleep may worsen digestive disorders, reduce insulin sensitivity and increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes. It can also accelerate skin aging, leading to wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, and reduced skin elasticity.

Other reported effects include memory problems, fertility issues in both men and women, increased appetite, feelings of loneliness and social isolation, and a greater risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Sleep deprivation may also hinder muscle growth and recovery by disrupting hormone production. Fitness specialists often emphasize the importance of adequate sleep for physical performance and muscle development.

One long-term study involving 10,000 participants over two decades found that people who regularly slept less than six hours per night faced nearly double the risk of death from any cause compared to those who maintained healthier sleep habits.

Medical experts recommend prioritizing seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night to support physical health, mental well-being, and long-term disease prevention.

Note: The findings are based on various studies published in medical journals. Individuals concerned about their sleep habits or health conditions should consult a qualified healthcare professional.
