Eight Glasses of Water May Not Be Enough During Extreme Heat, Experts Warn

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – Medical experts have warned that drinking just eight glasses of water a day may not be sufficient for everyone during extreme heat and heatwave conditions.
According to health specialists, high temperatures cause the body to lose water and essential salts through sweating, increasing the risk of dehydration.
Doctors explained that water requirements vary depending on weather conditions, humidity, age, physical activity, and overall health. People who work outdoors, athletes, elderly individuals, and those traveling long distances may require significantly more water than usual.
Medical experts also cautioned that thirst is not the first sign of dehydration. By the time a person feels thirsty, mild dehydration may have already begun. Early symptoms of dehydration include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle cramps, and dark-colored urine.
A medical expert stated that drinking excessive amounts of water at once can also be harmful, as it may disturb the body’s salt balance. Instead, drinking water regularly in moderate amounts throughout the day is considered more beneficial.
During intense heat, beverages such as coconut water, lemonade, yogurt drinks, and lassi can help maintain the body’s electrolyte balance. Water-rich foods including watermelon, cucumber, citrus fruits, and yogurt also help keep the body naturally hydrated.
Experts further advised that people suffering from kidney or heart conditions, as well as those taking diuretic medications, should not suddenly increase their water intake without consulting a doctor.
According to health professionals, the best way to stay protected during a heatwave is to drink water regularly according to the body’s needs, weather conditions, and level of physical activity.
