Japan Reimposes Ban on Indian Mango Imports After 20 Years

Tokyo: Japan has once again imposed a ban on the import of Indian mangoes after two decades, dealing a significant setback to India’s agricultural export sector.
According to international news agencies, Japanese authorities identified several shortcomings during inspections at Indian processing facilities, particularly related to treatment standards and quality compliance.
Reports suggest that irregularities were found in the fumigation and treatment processes, prompting officials to enforce the ban as a precautionary measure to prevent the risk of pests or contamination.
The decision is expected to impact exports of popular Indian mango varieties including Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Banaganapalli. Japan has taken the step under its zero-tolerance policy aimed at preventing the entry of harmful pests such as fruit flies and ensuring strict biosecurity standards.
Japanese officials reiterated that there can be no compromise on stringent import regulations and biological safety standards for fresh produce.
Analysts believe the move could cause financial losses to India’s agricultural export industry, particularly the mango sector, while further discussions between the two countries are expected in the future regarding the issue.
