Pakistan Emerges as Key Mediator Between US and Iran Amid Rising Regional Tensions: TRT Report

ISLAMABAD: Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, Pakistan’s role as a potential mediator has received growing international recognition, according to a report by Turkish media outlet TRT World.

The report said that during the US-Iran standoff, Pakistan emerged as a credible intermediary between both sides, adopting what it described as a “quiet, structured, and effective diplomatic approach” compared to other regional powers.

It further stated that Pakistan has pursued backchannel diplomacy, with Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly maintaining discreet communication channels to keep dialogue open between Washington and Tehran during sensitive periods.

According to TRT, Pakistan’s geographical position, military and intelligence credibility, and longstanding relations with both the United States and Iran have contributed to its unique diplomatic standing.

The report also highlighted that Pakistan maintains active diplomatic engagement with China, Gulf states, Iran, Turkey, and the United States, allowing it to act as a potential bridge between competing regional interests.

It noted that the recent Pakistan–Saudi Arabia defense agreement has further strengthened Islamabad’s regional standing, while the country’s military leadership continues to focus on counterterrorism efforts along its western borders.

However, TRT cautioned that Pakistan will need to address its economic challenges to sustain and expand its diplomatic influence in the long term.

The report added that several countries, including the United States, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, have previously acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in easing regional tensions.
