Trump Says US, Iran ‘Very Close’ to Finalizing Deal to End War

Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that American and Iranian negotiators are “very close” to finalizing an agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

In an interview with CBS News, Trump stated that the proposed final deal would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and ensure that Iran’s enriched uranium is handled “in a satisfactory manner.”

“I will only sign a deal in which we get everything we want,” Trump said.

According to US media reports, the latest proposals include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, restoring certain Iranian assets, and continuing negotiations between the two sides.

In another interview earlier, Trump said he would meet his negotiating team to discuss Iran’s latest offer and could decide by Sunday whether to resume military action or move forward with diplomacy.

According to the American news website Axios, Trump said there was a “50-50” chance that either a “good” agreement would be reached or Iran would be “completely destroyed.”

Trump said he would hold talks with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner regarding Tehran’s latest response, while Vice President JD Vance is also expected to attend the meeting.

“I think one of two things will happen — either I will hit them harder than ever before, or we will make a good deal,” Trump said.

The US president also noted that while some people favor a diplomatic agreement, others support restarting the war. However, he rejected suggestions that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was concerned about the possibility of Washington agreeing to an unfavorable deal.

Trump emphasized that he would only accept an agreement addressing issues such as uranium enrichment and Iran’s existing uranium stockpiles.

According to Axios, these complex issues are unlikely to be resolved in full detail under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) currently being discussed between Washington and Tehran.

The report added that the proposal would involve both countries agreeing to end the war and setting a 30-day period for more detailed negotiations.
