Bilawal Bhutto to Inaugurate Karachi’s Shaheed Bhutto Expressway Today

KARACHI: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, is set to inaugurate the Shaheed Bhutto Expressway in Karachi today, marking the completion of one of Sindh’s major infrastructure projects.
According to Syed Murad Ali Shah, the project was originally envisioned by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and has now been completed by the current provincial government.
The Sindh chief minister described the expressway as a major gift for the people of Karachi and said it would serve as a milestone in the city’s development.
He stated that the project would significantly improve Karachi’s economy, modern transport system and urban facilities. The expressway is expected to reduce travel time, lower fuel consumption and ease traffic congestion across the city.
Murad Ali Shah added that Karachi is the economic hub of Sindh and its development remains the government’s top priority. He termed the Shaheed Bhutto Expressway a major infrastructure initiative completed under a public-private partnership model.
Officials said the 39-kilometer-long road has been constructed at a cost exceeding Rs40 billion and designed for speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. The project also includes six modern interchanges and a smart tolling system.
The chief minister noted that direct connectivity from Qayyumabad to the M-9 Motorway would substantially cut travel time for commuters, while the Azimpura flyover would facilitate smoother traffic flow towards Jinnah Terminal.
Calling the expressway the “economic lifeline” of Karachi, Murad Ali Shah said the corridor would play a vital role in linking the port, industrial zones and upcountry traffic routes.
He further remarked that the Shaheed Bhutto Expressway is such a major roadway that aircraft can also land on it if needed.
