Vitamin D: Benefits or Risks? Experts Warn Against Excessive Use Without Medical Advice

Islamabad – Vitamin D is widely regarded as essential for human health, particularly for strengthening bones, supporting the immune system, and maintaining overall bodily functions. However, medical experts warn that excessive or unmonitored use of this vital nutrient can lead to serious health complications.
According to health specialists, taking high doses of vitamin D without proper testing or medical advice can be harmful. As a fat-soluble vitamin, it is not easily excreted from the body and can accumulate over time, potentially leading to toxic effects.
Experts say early warning signs of excessive vitamin D intake include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, unusual thirst, frequent urination, and dizziness. Other symptoms may include extreme fatigue, weakness, mental confusion, headaches, constipation, irregular heartbeat, and pain in bones or muscles.
Medical professionals further highlight that elevated calcium levels in the blood, a condition known as Hypercalcemia, can occur due to excessive vitamin D intake and may damage the kidneys.
Individuals who frequently consume high doses, such as 50,000 IU supplements, are at greater risk of toxicity, as the vitamin can build up in the body over time.
Experts advise that if such symptoms appear, individuals should immediately stop taking vitamin D supplements and consult a qualified doctor. Blood tests, especially those measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium levels, are crucial for proper diagnosis and assessment.
They emphasize that vitamin D supplementation should always be based on medical guidance and diagnostic testing. Self-medication or overuse can be dangerous, and maintaining balance under professional supervision is key to ensuring safe and effective health benefits.
