Senate Committee Reviews Proposal to Abolish Blue Passport System in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has reviewed key amendments to the Passport Act, with discussions focusing on the existing green and blue passport system in Pakistan.

The meeting, chaired by Dr Muhammad Humayun Mohmand, raised questions over the differentiation between passport categories.

During the session, committee member Kamran Murtaza argued that the distinction between green and blue passports represents discriminatory treatment, stressing that all Pakistani citizens should be granted equal status and respect.

Members proposed introducing a single uniform passport design for all citizens, while suggesting that official designation or rank could still be printed on the document for identification purposes.

The committee decided to form a sub-committee to further examine the matter and review possible amendments to the Passport Act 1974.

Officials noted that the issue of abolishing the blue passport or introducing a unified passport system has been discussed in the Senate on previous occasions as well.
