IHC fixes hearing on Iman Mazari, Hadi Ali’s pleas for suspension of sentence in controversial tweets case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled for hearing tomorrow the miscellaneous applications filed by lawyer Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha seeking fixation of their pleas for suspension of sentence in the controversial tweets case.

The Registrar Office of the IHC issued the cause list for the hearing. Justice Muhammad Azam Khan had also heard the miscellaneous applications earlier today.

The Supreme Court had directed the Islamabad High Court to decide the suspension of sentence pleas within two weeks. The court had also instructed the petitioners to submit a certified copy of the Supreme Court’s order through a miscellaneous application.

Lawyers representing Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha subsequently submitted the certified copy of the verdict through a fresh application, after which the case was fixed for hearing again tomorrow.

During today’s proceedings, Justice Muhammad Azam Khan raised an objection over the non-submission of the certified copy of the Supreme Court order.

Senior lawyer Faisal Siddiqui appeared before the court on behalf of the petitioners, while Islamabad District Bar President Naeem Gujar and former bar president Riasat Ali Azad also attended the hearing. Iman Mazari’s mother, Dr Sherin Mazari, along with members of civil society, was also present in the courtroom.

Faisal Siddiqui informed the court that an urgent hearing request had been filed following the Supreme Court’s order.

When the court inquired about the certified copy, Siddiqui stated that a copy of the order downloaded from the Supreme Court website had initially been attached with the miscellaneous application, and that the certified copy was now being formally submitted.

As the counsel attempted to hand over the certified copy directly to the bench, Justice Azam Khan remarked that the proper procedure was to file it through the court branch along with a miscellaneous application rather than submitting it directly in court.

Following the court’s direction, Faisal Siddiqui said he would file a fresh application the same day.
