9 May Events a Dark Chapter in Pakistan’s History: Sherry Rehman

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad — Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Sherry Rehman has described the events of May 9 as a “dark chapter” in Pakistan’s history, stating that they were an attack on national integrity and unity.
In a statement, she said that during the time of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s execution, party workers had protested and even self-immolated but did not attack state institutions. Similarly, she noted that after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, protests were held across all provinces under the slogan “Pakistan Khappay.”
Sherry Rehman said that although incidents of arson and unrest occurred after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, no attacks were carried out on military installations or martyrs’ memorials. She emphasized that the slogan of national unity prevailed at that time.
She further stated that the events of May 9, in which military installations, memorials of martyrs, and national institutions were targeted, were in fact an attack on Pakistan itself. She added that those responsible for planning and facilitating the incidents were given punishment in accordance with law and the Constitution.
The PPP leader said that it was the first time in Pakistan’s history that national defense installations were targeted during political unrest. She warned that those who incite youth against state institutions cannot be considered well-wishers of the country.
She reaffirmed that the nation stands with its armed forces, martyrs, and institutions, and will continue to foil all conspiracies against Pakistan.
Referring to recent developments, she said that during “Marka-e-Haq,” the armed forces demonstrated professionalism and sacrifice, sending a clear message to the enemy. She added that Pakistan has emerged as a stronger and more dignified country on the global stage, with the armed forces playing a key role.
Sherry Rehman also said that Pakistan’s armed forces are a symbol of national pride, security, and stability.
