Pakistan Diverts Gas from CNG Sector to Power Plants to Tackle Electricity Shortage

The government in Islamabad has decided to divert gas supply from the CNG sector to the power sector in an effort to address the country’s worsening electricity crisis.

Under the new arrangement, approximately 48 MMCFD (million cubic feet per day) of gas previously allocated to the CNG sector has been suspended and redirected to power generation. This move increases the gas allocation for the power sector from 108 MMCFD to 150 MMCFD.

Officials say the step is part of broader efforts to stabilize electricity supply amid rising demand and persistent shortages. However, despite the increase, the power sector continues to face a significant gas shortfall.

According to the government’s gas load management plan, domestic consumers will be given priority for gas supply during meal times, while other sectors may continue to face restrictions.

The decision reflects ongoing challenges in balancing energy needs across sectors as Pakistan grapples with limited fuel resources and growing power demand.
