Trump Says Iran Seeking Talks as U.S. Delegation Heads to Islamabad

Washington:U.S. President Donald Trump said that Iran is seeking negotiations to reach a potential agreement with the United States, signaling a possible diplomatic opening amid ongoing tensions.
Speaking to reporters, Trump stated that Iran “wants to talk” and that Washington is waiting to see what kind of proposal Tehran presents. He emphasized that any Iranian offer would need to meet U.S. demands.
Earlier, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed during a press briefing that a U.S. delegation is being sent to Islamabad after Iran requested direct negotiations. She added that Trump had shown flexibility by extending a ceasefire, after which Iranian officials initiated contact.
According to U.S. officials, envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to arrive in Islamabad for talks, while Vice President JD Vance will remain in the United States to monitor the situation.
Leavitt also praised Pakistan for its role as a mediator, describing it as a “valuable partner” in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran. She expressed hope that the talks would be productive and lead to a deal.
Media reports suggest that if progress is made during initial discussions between the U.S. delegation and Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, Vice President Vance may later travel to Islamabad to join the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Araghchi confirmed he is embarking on a regional tour including Islamabad, Muscat, and Moscow to consult with partners on bilateral issues and the evolving regional situation.
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the Iranian delegation’s visit to Pakistan as an important diplomatic development, while Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar briefed him on ongoing contacts and the expected second round of U.S.-Iran talks.
