DRAP Takes Strict Action Against Illegal Online Sale and Promotion of Medicines; Requests PTA to Block Websites

ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has taken strict notice of the illegal online sale and promotion of medicines across the country.

According to officials, DRAP has formally requested the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block several websites and social media pages involved in the unlawful advertising and sale of pharmaceutical products.

The request includes identification of multiple online platforms allegedly engaged in selling medicines without authorization. DRAP stated that the sale of smuggled medicines from countries including India and Iran has also been uncovered, terming such activities a serious threat to public health.

Authorities expressed concern over the online promotion of prescription drugs, particularly medicines related to sexual health, weight loss, and mental health, without proper authorization. They warned that such practices violate drug regulations and encourage self-medication among the public.

DRAP further stated that unregulated online advertisements may lead to severe side effects and life-threatening complications due to substandard medicines.

The regulatory body has made prior approval mandatory for pharmaceutical advertising and warned of strict action, including fines, seizure of medicines, and legal proceedings against violators.

DRAP has also urged PTA to cooperate with social media companies to immediately remove illegal advertisements and advised the public to avoid purchasing medicines from unverified online sources.
