Pakistan Considers Shortening Summer Vacations as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Introduces 4-Day School Week

Islamabad / Peshawar: Major changes are being considered in Pakistan’s education sector, including a proposal to reduce summer vacations, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has officially introduced a new four-day working week for government schools.
According to reports, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has revealed that the government is considering reducing summer holidays by 15 to 20 days this year. The proposal aims to minimize the academic gap and ensure timely completion of the syllabus.
He further stated that the number of teaching days may be increased from 180 to 190 days in the upcoming academic year. A reduction of 5 to 6 days in winter vacations is also under consideration to prevent loss of valuable study time for students.
Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education Department has officially implemented a four-day school week for all government educational institutions across the province.
According to the notification, all public schools will now remain open from Sunday to Thursday, while Friday and Saturday have been declared weekly holidays. The new schedule has been implemented with effect from April 1, 2026.
The provincial government said the decision aims to streamline the education system and improve resource management while maintaining academic efficiency.
