Illegal Trawlers Flood Pasni and Ormara Coasts, Threatening Marine Life and Fishermen’s Livelihoods

Gwadar: Illegal trawling activities have intensified along the coastal waters of Pasni and Ormara, raising serious concerns among local fishermen over the destruction of marine resources and their livelihoods.

According to details, local fishermen have reported a surge in large trawlers operating unlawfully in the area, allegedly using fine-mesh nets that are catching not only large fish but also juvenile marine life in large quantities. The fishermen also shared videos of the illegal activity on social media to highlight the issue.

They warned that such practices are severely damaging the marine ecosystem and could lead to long-term environmental degradation if not controlled immediately.

Fishermen accused the Balochistan Fisheries Department of inaction, saying repeated complaints have failed to produce any meaningful enforcement against illegal trawling operations.

Experts noted that the ongoing illegal fishing practices are disrupting the ecological balance of the sea, with potentially irreversible consequences for marine biodiversity.

Local fishing communities said their income sources are rapidly declining due to the increasing presence of trawlers in restricted waters, further worsening their economic conditions.

They have called on the government to take urgent and strict action against illegal trawling, enforce maritime regulations, and protect both marine life and the livelihoods of coastal communities in Balochistan.
