NADRA Warns Citizens of Mobile SIMs and Bank Account Blocks Over Expired CNICs

Islamabad: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has urged citizens to renew their Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) before their expiry, warning that delays could affect access to bank accounts, mobile SIMs, and other services.
According to NADRA, expired CNICs may prevent citizens from accessing financial and communication services, as well as government and welfare programs. While fines can be imposed for late renewals, the authority said enforcement is not currently in effect.
NADRA records indicate that millions of CNICs and related documents across the country have already expired. Citizens receive timely renewal reminders via SMS. The authority also emphasized that individuals must obtain their CNIC immediately upon turning 18, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) requires an active CNIC to use mobile services.
Currently, over 8.1 million mobile SIMs are active on expired CNICs, which can be blocked at any time. SIMs registered under deceased individuals’ names are also at risk of deactivation, and citizens are advised to transfer them promptly to living family members.
NADRA warned that after June, late CNIC renewals may incur additional fees and penalties. Citizens can renew their CNICs at NADRA centers, via the Pak ID app, or at e-Sahulat centers.
