Frequent Yawning May Signal Serious Health Risks, Experts Warn

Islamabad: Health experts have warned that frequent yawning and persistent daytime sleepiness may indicate a serious underlying health issue rather than simple fatigue.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, repeated yawning is often a sign of insufficient sleep, which can become dangerous if ignored. The organization’s position has also been supported by 25 medical associations worldwide.

Experts say that lack of proper sleep not only affects individuals but can also have wider societal consequences. For instance, drowsy driving can lead to accidents, while reduced focus at work increases the risk of errors and poor performance.

Medical professionals recommend 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep daily. Failure to meet this requirement can increase the risk of serious conditions such as Diabetes, Depression, heart disease, kidney problems, high blood pressure, obesity, and stroke.

Sleep specialists note that people often ignore signs of sleep deprivation, such as dozing off during meetings, which is a clear indication that the body is not getting enough rest. They add that a well-rested person typically does not feel sleepy even in boring situations.

Chronic sleep deprivation can impair brain function, affecting memory, reaction time, and coordination. In severe cases, the brain may enter brief “micro-sleep” episodes, which are especially dangerous during activities like driving or operating machinery.

Experts also highlight common causes of poor sleep, including Sleep Apnea, insomnia, unhealthy lifestyle habits, medications, and stress. Excessive caffeine intake, alcohol consumption before bedtime, lack of exercise, and uncomfortable sleep environments can further worsen sleep quality.

They advise individuals experiencing persistent sleepiness to take the issue seriously and seek medical evaluation if necessary, to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
