MQM Issues ‘Final Warning’ to Federal Government, Demands Immediate Local Government Reforms

Karachi: Senior leaders of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) have issued a “final warning” to the federal government, urging it to change its approach and ensure political inclusivity, warning that failure to do so could endanger overall stability.

Addressing a crowded press conference, senior MQM leader and MNA Farooq Sattar strongly criticized the federal government, alleging that it is unwilling to tolerate even a single constitutional position held by MQM, while retaining multiple offices itself. He called on the government to show flexibility and openness, cautioning that otherwise “everyone’s survival and security could be at risk.”

Sattar emphasized that Pakistan’s stability is closely tied to the development of Karachi, adding that the country’s economic and political future depends on establishing an empowered local government system. He demanded immediate steps to implement an effective grassroots governance structure.

MQM Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, speaking at the same press conference, alleged that artificial majorities in Karachi are being used to block the transfer of powers and resources to the public. He called for the introduction of a “28th Constitutional Amendment,” saying the nation is awaiting such reforms.

He invited all political parties to support the proposed amendment, stating that MQM would stand alongside them in ensuring that people receive their rightful powers and resources.

Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal also addressed the media, stressing that the importance of the proposed constitutional amendment has significantly increased in the current national context. He said that without devolving powers to the grassroots level, it would be difficult to address the country’s ongoing challenges.

MQM leadership made it clear that it would no longer tolerate delays and is determined to pursue its demands for structural reforms.
