KP Government Announces Rs2,200 Subsidy for Registered Motorcyclists After Fuel Price Hike

Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a financial relief package for motorcyclists following the recent increase in petroleum prices.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi rejected the federal government’s decision to raise fuel prices and unveiled a special subsidy scheme for registered motorcycle owners across the province.

Speaking at a press conference, the chief minister said there are currently around 1.4 to 1.6 million registered motorcycles in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Under the new program, each registered motorcycle owner will receive Rs2,200 as financial assistance, with the provincial government bearing all expenses of the relief package.

He also clarified that despite the rise in fuel prices, fares for the Bus Rapid Transit Peshawar will not be increased to protect ordinary commuters from additional financial burden.

Criticizing the Government of Pakistan, Afridi described the fuel price hike as equivalent to dropping a “petrol bomb” on the public. He urged federal authorities to reduce their own expenditures instead of passing the burden onto citizens and to consult provinces before making major pricing decisions.

Although the subsidy amount has been announced, details on how the payment will be transferred to motorcycle owners—such as through bank accounts or a system similar to the Ehsaas Programme—will be shared later.
